Day 47 - December 18, 1997
Mancora, Peru to Casma, Peru
Miles - 514
(by Jim)
After covering about 120 miles, David, Gary, and Alex wanted
to stop for lunch. Both Jay and I were hungry for road -- I was
particularly anxious because I did not have the luxury of time that
the others had. So, Jay and I told the others that we would go ahead
and then wait an hour for them in Trujillo. We made the contingency
plan, that if we didn«t see each other sooner, we would meet on
Friday morning at 10am at the South American Explorer«s Club in
Lima. (We actually met there at 11am!)
After a long ride on windy roads lined with sand dunes
we stopped in Casma, Peru where we received a police escort to Hotel
Indoamerica. The beds were great, the bathroom lousy, but they had
a garage where we could put the motos. Jay went to bed and I went
out for a bite to eat, where I watched what every television in
Peru was tuned to--the crisis at the Japanese embassy in Lima, our
next stop!
Day 48 - Thursday, December 19,
1996
Casma, Peru to Lima, Peru
Miles - 250
(by Jim)
Jay and I headed out early, but his allergies were as bad
as I have ever seen. His face was puffed up like the Sta-Puff marshmallow
man. Along the road we ran into Dave, the Scott, and Leanne, the
Australian, whom we had met earlier in Panama.
We traded some war stories and decided to head into Lima
together. When we arrived in Lima we immediately found ourselves
in the middle of the worst--I mean the all-time worst--traffic jam
of smoke-bellowing, gridlocked busses I have ever encountered. Thankfully,
between Dave«s map, my Spanish, and Leanne«s willingness to hop
off the bike and look for street signs, we were able to locate Hotel
Espana, a nice little hostel with lots of travellers and great chocolate
cake.
Jay and I were hoping that the boys would arrive the next
day, during daylight, because to arrive at Lima at night would be
something less than pleasant.
